The reason your on stage - in 3 Parts

If PRIORITIES aren’t clear,
PREFERENCES will always take their place.

As a band, our job is to serve our congregation through songs.

Some weeks, it seems like these songs are reaching the people. Other weeks, well…not so much.

We know that engaging our church every Sunday is a full body effort - it’s not all on the band!

But, what part do the musicians play in crafting songs to best serve our church?

In recent

Leverage the potential of every song in your setlist by making these 3 things a PRIORITY every single week:

1. Serve the STORY

Every worship song is a story about God (if yours aren’t, we have a problem).

Worship songs have a main character - God.

God is acting in history - God did something, is doing something, or will do something.

There are other characters God is interacting with - Me, the Church, the World

(Sadly, most popular songs today are structured as individual prayers and rarely refer to the church or use corporate language like: Us, Our, We. Even more, try to find a worship song in the CCLI Top 100 that references loving one another. There’s Build My Life and…?)

Our songs look back to Creation, Israel, the Sermon on the Mount, the Cross, and the Resurrection.

Our songs look forward to the Day of the Lord, a renewed heavens and earth, and an eternity spent with Him.

And in light of our looking back and looking forward, we look for God’s Spirit to move among us in the present to shape us, guide us, and build His church.

But, how can our church respond in adoration to God, if they haven’t actually thought about lyrics?

Our band must see themselves as Storytellers, helping our church get caught up in THEE story.

2. Support the MELODY

People physically react in many ways to songs. All of these can be expressions of worship.

But usually the most important thing we are asking our church to DO with their bodies is to SING.

3. Shape ENERGY

Now that we’ve laid the foundation of STORY and MELODY, we can talk about ENERGY.
